Sam - BMW Dallas Marathon Junior Race Director

Since 2007, the Patient Champion program has enlisted Scottish Rite Hospital patients to help encourage and cheer on runners in the BMW Dallas Marathon. This program is a way to highlight some of the wonderful kids the marathon generously supports each year. We’re excited to introduce you to Sam, our Junior Race Director!

Sam, age 12, of Hutchins, is a student at J L Long Middle School in Dallas and has been a Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children patient for three years.

Sam sees the Director of Research, Harry Kim M.D., for his Perthes hip disorder. The Center for Excellence in Hip focuses on developing innovative techniques to treat a range of complex conditions.

Sam’s favorite part of the hospital is the Child Life center, where he can make crafts, create artwork, and play games. The hospital’s child life specialists and artist-in-residence partner up for art projects to allow patients to express themselves and take their minds off of surgery.

Sam loves playing percussion in his school band and doesn’t back down from a challenge. His free time is spent solving his Rubik’s cube, competing in wheelchair motocross or playing Sled Hockey. Sam loves what he does and always shines bright!
