Rheumatology Team Attends International Meeting

Recently, staff from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children attended the American College of Rheumatology’s (ACR) 2018 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. The conference brought together nearly 16,000 rheumatologists, fellows-in-training and other medical professionals from more than 100 countries. There were over 100 presentations at the meeting focused on the latest advances, clinical issues, professional development and more in the field of rheumatology.

Members from the hospital’s Rheumatology and Therapeutic Recreation departments were actively involved in the conference presenting latest research. Dana Dempsey, M.S., C.T.R.S., and Alejandra “Alex” Hernandez, B.S.N., R.N., presented on the benefits of camps for children with rheumatic disease. The presentation explored how a weeklong residential camp experience can have a positive lasting impact on the child with rheumatic disease, and discussed guidelines for camp development by following best practices. Hernandez, who has been a member of ACR since 2008, also presented on opportunities for improvement within pediatric transition approaches in the U.S. Nurse practitioner Heather Benham, D.N.P., R.N., C.P.N.P., also spoke at the annual meeting.  Benham presented on the challenges and recommendations of on-boarding and integrating an advanced practice provider (APP) into a rheumatology practice.

Scottish Rite Hospital’s medical director of rheumatology Marilynn G. Punaro, M.D., received the 2018 Distinguished Clinician Scholar Award, which is given to a rheumatologist who has made outstanding contributions in clinical medicine and clinical education.
