The Hospital Welcomes Former Fellows For 41st Brandon Carrell Visiting Professorship

This week, Scottish Rite Hospital is celebrating the 41st anniversary for the Brandon Carrell Visiting Professorship (BCVP). Established in honor of Brandon Carrell, M.D., the hospital’s chief of staff from 1945-1978, the program brings together current and former fellows and staff to discuss the latest research and treatment techniques in pediatric orthopedics. The two-day meeting cultivates collaboration and discussion among attendees as staff, fellows and visiting professors present on various topics within the field.

This year, two pediatric orthopedic experts have been invited to be the visiting professors – Steven Frick, M.D., and James Sanders, M.D. Frick is the Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Lucile Pack Children’s Hospital and is the current president of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA). With clinical and research interests in clubfoot, hip dysplasia and trauma, his BCVP presentation encompasses the decision making in children diagnosed with developmental dysplasia of the hip. Sanders is a former fellow of Scottish Rite Hospital and is currently the Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UNC School of Medicine. With interests in spinal deformity, the relationship of growth to musculoskeletal disorders and understanding human gait, his BCVP lecture is focused on scoliosis.

A variety of topics are being discussed as research and case presentations. Those areas include:
  • Limb lengthening
  • Foot deformities
  • Spinal deformities
  • Trauma
  • Hip conditions
  • Fractures
Course director, pediatric orthopedic surgeon and former fellow at Scottish Rite Hospital Corey S. Gill, M.D., M.A., is honored to have the opportunity to lead an educational course of this caliber. “The annual BCVP conference is something I look forward to each year,” says Gill. “Since my time as a fellow, the meeting has continued to be unique in that it welcomes back former staff and fellows throughout the decades to collaborate on how to advance the care of pediatric orthopedic patients. Alumni from across the country travel to attend and participate throughout the program, which showcases the true impact Scottish Rite Hospital and BCVP have on those that attend.”
