International Group Collaborates to Advance the Treatment of Perthes Disease

For the eighth consecutive year, Scottish Rite Hospital is honored to host the International Perthes Study Group (IPSG) for their annual meeting. This week, members from IPSG are traveling to Dallas from across the world to discuss the group’s research initiatives, status of ongoing projects and collaborate on the latest treatment options for children diagnosed with Perthes disease.

Established in 2012, IPSG includes over 40 pediatric orthopedic surgeons and researchers from 10 different countries who are dedicated to improving the care of patients with Perthes disease – a childhood hip disorder which affects the ball portion of the hip joint. The group conducts ongoing research and utilizes what they learn to educate fellow medical professionals, as well patients and their families. As a multicenter research project, Scottish Rite Hospital is proud to be the lead center for IPSG.

Pediatric orthopedic surgeon and director of the hospital’s Center for Excellence in Hip Harry Kim, M.D., M.S., is the leader and chair of IPSG. As an expert in caring for the hospital’s hip patients, Kim has a special passion for Perthes disease. Because of its rarity and overall mystery regarding unanswered questions about the disease, he sees a great need for continuous research. “IPSG allows us, as specialists, to focus on the disease as a whole,” says Kim. “We have a unique opportunity to collaborate and evaluate the presentation of Perthes in children at the various institutions who are part of the group. Although there are still uncertainties with the condition, we have made significant strides in advancing the treatment.”

In addition to the annual meeting, the hospital is hosting the 3rd Annual Perthes Family Conference – a one-day event that brings together patients and their families who have been affected by Perthes disease. The attendees have the opportunity to connect with fellow families as well as hear from the IPSG members.
