Get to Know our SRH Staff: Wanda Osteen, Sterile Processing

What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
I am the sterile processing manager. Sterile processing is responsible for sterilizing surgical instruments and implants for surgery.

What led you to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children? How long have you worked here?
My passion for helping children is what brought me to the organization, back in August 2017.

What do you enjoy most about Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children?
There are many things that I enjoy about working here, but I think my top three are:
  1. The smiling faces of the children whose life has been impacted, due to this hospital giving them a second chance at their childhood.
  2. The volunteers that are dedicated to the organization.
  3. The warm family environment that you immediately feel as soon you enter the front door.
What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
I was the administrator of a daycare/private school for four years before striking an interest in the medical field. I worked at a nursing home for about two years and obtained a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification. The sterile processing field quickly became my passion once I started working in a hospital environment. I obtained my Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification and worked as a sterile processing tech, team lead and manager for the past 20 years in sterile processing.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my family and being in the great outdoors!

Three words to best describe you:
Passionate, determined, loyal

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I would probably open my own daycare because I love working with children.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I guess the most adventurous thing I have ever done was ride my Harley from Texas to New York on a two-week vacation.
