Get to Know our SRH Staff: Van Anh Phan, Pharmacy
What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
I enjoy being able to see different patients and families each day. My day ranges from interacting with patients that have been staying here for months, those who are here for surgeries and those coming in for a clinic appointment.
What was your first job? What path did you take to get here? How long have you worked here?
My first job was at the clothing store, Mervyn’s, when I was in high school. In college, I majored in chemical engineering the first two years and then discovered that it was not my cup of tea. My parents suggested I look into pharmacy. I applied and was accepted into the University of Houston pharmacy school. I have since worked for Randalls, Eckerds (which is now CVS), Tom Thumb, Children's Medical Center of Dallas and now here for five years.
What are you currently watching on Netflix?
A lot of cooking shows.
Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?
Oprah
What is a fun or interesting fact about your hometown?
I was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam. You can have ‘banh mi’ = Vietnamese sandwiches or ‘pho’ = rice noodle soup for breakfast, lunch or dinner - pretty much 24 hours a day!
Another interesting fact, an estimated ten million motor bikes travel on the roads of Vietnam every day. Our Texas traffic is considered light compared to that.
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
Cheering on my kids at their soccer games and swim meets.
- Prepare medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders.
- Dispense medications by compounding, packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals.
- Control medications by monitoring drug therapies and advising interventions.
- Complete pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' workflow.
- Counsel families on how to give discharge medications at home and on how to taper off narcotics.
