Get to Know our SRH Staff: Lia Young, Inpatient Unit

What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
I am the Assistant Director of Nursing for the Inpatient Unit. At Scottish Rite Hospital, we treat all inpatients in one unit, versus dividing them by diagnosis. As the Assistant Director of Nursing, my primary focus is scheduling and staffing. I make sure we are staffed to provide safe and exceptional patient care and also participate in the hiring process.

I frequently work with my staff to ensure that they have the proper resources necessary to provide patient care. I also feel that it is important to help staff maintain a work-life balance, so they can meet and exceed their personal and professional goals. I assist in making sure the staff and unit maintain Joint Commission and educational compliance.

What led you to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children? How long have you worked here?
My 10-year anniversary is this August and I have been a nurse for almost twenty years. Before coming here, I was a clinical manager at another hospital on the Mother/Baby Unit and worked the 3-11 shift. At the time, I was pregnant with my first child and anticipated that the schedule would not work for my family. I knew that I wanted a leadership role with normal hours that was still in the area of women’s health or pediatrics. I learned about this position, interviewed while on maternity leave and was offered the job.

What do you enjoy most about Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children?
I enjoy the friendships and camaraderie that are formed amongst the staff. It really IS a great place to work. It really IS like a big family. I feel like we each care about our peers on more than just a co-worker level. We support each other, help each other and even miss each other when out on vacation. Oh, and of course, the popcorn!

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
My first job was at Little Caesar’s Pizza. I worked there throughout high school. It really helped me to not eat too much pizza during my first year of college - I didn’t even want to look at pizza!

What do you like to do in your spare time?
“Spare time” is quite illusive. When I’m not at the hospital, I am a realtor for Keller Williams, the owner of a copier consulting business, the author of my latest book No Matter What…I Still Win, a single mother of five kiddos (two under 18) and an active member of my church. When I do snag some free time, I enjoy traveling, looking through cookbooks, watching movies and catching up on sleep.

I am a scleroderma survivor and double lung transplant recipient, and after experiencing a number of health challenges and victories throughout my life, I felt compelled to write a book. No Matter What … I Still Win is a way for me to share my experiences while also being a resource for individuals undergoing lung transplantation and/or other medical crises.

Three words to best describe you:
Funny, strong and optimistic

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
If I weren’t a nurse, I would probably be some type of food and travel blogger. I love to travel and experience different cultures… and eat! Getting paid to travel and eat would be like hitting the lottery.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Ziplining in the jungles of Jamaica was pretty adventurous…and scary. I’m not the outdoorsy type.
