Get to Know our SRH Staff: John Wagner, Sports Medicine

What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
I am a researcher with our Sports Medicine team. My work focuses primarily on conditions and injuries of the hip and knee, including ACL tears, Osteochondritis Dissecans, Patellar Instability and Femoroacetabular Impingement. The goal of our research is to make sure young athletes have access to the best evidence-based care.

On a daily basis, I manage the operations of our many ongoing studies. This includes patient enrollment and follow-up, data analysis, and preparation of our findings for presentation at national research conferences or for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

What led you to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children? How long have you worked here?
I first worked at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children while in college as a summer research student. Through that internship, I discovered a passion for orthopedic medicine and became fascinated by the amazing care provided at Scottish Rite Hospital.

Upon graduating, I began working full-time with our Research department. I have worked here for over a year now, and I continue to be amazed every day by the care provided at our institution.

What do you enjoy most about Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children?
I enjoy the people - staff, volunteers and patients. The hospital is an incredibly inspiring place to work. The staff are dedicated to providing the best care possible, the volunteers are committed to making the hospital a friendly and welcoming place and the patients are some of the strongest, most resilient people I have ever met.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love the outdoors, travel and photography.

Three words to best describe you:
Compassionate, friendly, driven

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I would be a doctor. In fact, that is what I am trying to do. I am currently applying to medical school with the goal of one day becoming a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Fingers crossed!

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I have been skydiving. As somebody that generally is not very fond of heights, it was definitely a step outside of my comfort zone. It was fun, but I am not trying to jump out of an airplane again any time soon.
