Get to Know our SRH Staff: Andrea Brown, Child Life

What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
As a certified child life specialist (CLS), I provide developmentally appropriate interventions such as preparation, distraction and education to hopefully reduce fear, anxiety and stressors for patients of all ages. I cover our outpatient orthopedic clinics and spend every day on my toes assisting patients and families in clinic, so they can have the most positive experience that we can provide!

What led you to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children? How long have you worked here?
I actually learned about the field of child life and Scottish Rite Hospital through my cousin, who was a CLS here when I was in college. I decided to begin volunteering at a hospital camp during my summers, which only grew my passion for this place. I always knew Scottish Rite Hospital was where I wanted to be, and I am celebrating my 10-year anniversary this year.

What do you enjoy most about Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children?
I first and foremost enjoy the patients and the population we serve. It is amazing to see what these kids can do. I never walk away from a day of work without being in awe of something a child was able to accomplish. The staff is also like a family. I love how everyone cares for and encourages each other.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
I have been a nanny, a file clerk and worked afterschool care. However, my first job out of college was as a child life specialist in the cardiology/nephrology inpatient unit at Cook Children’s. Although I adored it there and loved my experience, I had always known Scottish Rite Hospital was where I was supposed to be. When the opportunity was presented for me to come here, I jumped!

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my friends and most importantly, family! However, I also enjoy being creative, crocheting and working out.

Three words to best describe you:
Loyal, creative, kind

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I know that I was meant to be a child life specialist, but I also know that I would enjoy teaching greatly!

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Besides the one time I stayed at a hostel? I am not someone to go do crazy things, but I do love a good adventure. Last year I went zip lining through the Belizean rainforest!
