Sports Medicine Team Awarded Grant for Multi-Center Project

Recently, staff orthopedist Henry B. Ellis, M.D. from the Center for Excellence in Sports Medicine along with other national leaders in orthopedics were awarded approximately $50,000 to establish a multi-center registry. Ellis is leading a team of experts from the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine (PRISM) group to analyze outcomes and complications associated with common knee surgeries. The grant is provided by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) along with funds from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA). With 45 participating surgeons at 30 institutions across the country and in Canada, Scottish Rite Hospital is the host facility and is leading the efforts for the multi-center project.

The purpose of the project is to collect data on pediatric patients who undergo procedures for various injuries or orthopedic conditions, including: meniscus repair, ACL reconstruction, tibial spine fixation or discoid meniscus surgery. From the collected information, participating institutions have a goal to establish standards of care, identify quality improvement opportunities and educate the public on the complications associated with these surgeries.

As the lead physician on this project, Ellis sees great value in these quality improvement efforts. “As an institution dedicated to providing pediatric patients with the best possible orthopedic care, we are honored to have the opportunity to lead this dynamic project,” says Ellis. “Our goals are to analyze the complications associated with these procedures, educate fellow caregivers to standardize treatment and reduce risks for these patients.”

Scottish Rite Hospital looks forward to the success of this benchmark registry. As we continue to be committed to research and education, it is projects such as this that allows us to be leaders in the industry to provide the best care to our patients and children everywhere.
