Scottish Rite Hospital Recieves the 2017 Behrooz Akbarnia, M.D. Best Paper Award
Recently, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children received the 2017 Behrooz Akbarnia, M.D. Best Paper award at 11th International Congress on Early Onset Scoliosis (ICEOS) annual meeting. The research titled, “Continued deterioration in pulmonary function at minimum 18-year follow-up from early thoracic fusion in non-neuromuscular scoliosis” was one of the eight papers nominated.
The project is authored by past fellow Daniel Bouton, M.D., Assistant Chief of Staff Lori A. Karol, M.D., Assistant Chief of Staff Emeritus Charles E. Johnston, M.D. and research coordinator Kiley Poppino, B.S. The purpose of this study was to analyze if there is continued decline in pulmonary function at long-term follow-up in patients who have undergone a thoracic spinal fusion for early onset scoliosis prior to the age of nine years old. Our team has followed these patients a minimum of 18 years after their surgery to record their pulmonary status. Repeat lung function testing in adulthood was compared to the previous 11-year pulmonary function follow-up.
In conclusion, the research shows that children who received a thoracic spinal fusion at a young age have continued decline in their pulmonary function as they enter adulthood. Early treatment of their spinal curvature does not allow full development of the lungs due to abnormal chest growth. Our experts see the importance of researching this patient population to help determine how spinal surgery impacts respiratory function and how future innovative treatment might allow better pulmonary growth in young children with scoliosis.
