#SRHaccess Facebook LIVE Recap: Movement Science Lab - Frisco

On this week’s Facebook live, Kirsten Tulchin-Francis, Ph.D., joined the segment to give us a first look at the state-of-the-art Movement Science Lab in Frisco. Below is a recap of the conversation.

Watch the live segment.

Details on the space:
  • Large space specifically designed for sports medicine patients.
  • Designed for running, cutting and sport like movements.
  • Feels like a gymnasium with high ceilings.
  • 14 motion capture cameras
  • The patient wears markers that the cameras detect to create a three-dimensional model of the athlete while moving.
  • Plates under the flooring measure the amount of force when landing, walking and running.
  • A large screen on the wall of the lab provides a real-time feed for staff and the patients to see how each part of the body is moving.
  • The cameras can move outside to the track on tripods or be mounted to the wall.
    • The track allows the team to test the patients on a curve.
  • Sports turf – gives the athlete the ability to perform their sports movement in an open space, i.e. throwing or kicking a ball.
What else is there to know about the lab?
  • Focused mainly on sports medicine research
    • Post ACL injury –  after a patient has ACL reconstruction surgery, the lab is able to evaluate his or her movement as they recover.
    • Concussion patients – how quickly can they recover cognitively after their injury.
    • The function and movement of athletes in different knee braces – the effectiveness of the brace while playing his or her sport.
    • A tool for injury prevention.
