Meet Liza - a grant specialist who works closely with our doctors and researchers. She has been at the hospital for two and half years. Learn more about her in our SRH Staff Spotlight below:

What’s your favorite part of your job?
I love being able to learn about all of the various projects that we have going on in research and getting to see the details behind them all. I am very detail oriented and enjoy seeing the nuts and bolts of our research projects and how we can take what we are doing and bring it to practice.

What’s your favorite thing about the hospital?
That we always do what’s best for our kiddos.

Describe a typical day.
That’s difficult – things in research, especially grants, are always changing depending on what’s going on. Usually, I am reviewing documents/applications, working on study budgets and searching for new funding opportunities.

How did you find out about the hospital?
My brother was a patient here when we were growing up, so Scottish Rite Hospital has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

What made you want to work here?
Ever since I was a child, I have always wanted to work here. I love who we are, what we do for the children, their families and what we stand for. It’s been a dream come true to work here!

What skills do you need for your job?
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Organization
  • Detail oriented
  • Good understanding of research
What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
Waterfront guide/lifeguard at a Wilderness Ranch Camp in Missouri.

Two years after I graduated from Texas A&M and moved to Missouri, I moved back to Texas to go to school with the intent of going to medical school. I became heavily involved with and eventually managed a Chronic Pain and Disability Psychology Research Lab at UNT and fell in love with health research.

What is your favorite…
  • Hospital event: Pancake Breakfast
  • Food in the cafeteria: Grilled cheese and tomato soup
  • Place in the hospital: The park and all of the honor/memorial bricks or the atrium
What’s your favorite…
  • Place to travel: Anywhere with mountains and green space
  • Type of food: Mexican (chips & queso)
  • TV show: E.R.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Invisibility. I would love an invisibility cloak like in Harry Potter.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
Surgeon

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I went backwoods backpacking in Colorado and spent 10 days in the mountains hiking, sleeping on a tarp under the stars and we summited a fourteener (Mt. Shavano) while we were in the mountains.

What’s the last book you read?
Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes

What kind of animal would you be?
Cat…or a Raccoon (they have hands!)

How long is your commute? What do you do on the drive?
10-15 minutes. I listen to music, usually something from the ninety’s or old country music

What is something people don’t know about you?
Well, they know it now, but it is that I worked at a wilderness camp after college and got to go camping, kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, rafting and biking for work. I also taught tweens/teenagers to kayak, raft, canoe and shoot archery while I was there.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?
"Sk8er Boi" by Avril Lavigne or "Since You’ve Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson
