Get to Know our SRH Staff: Juan Velasquez, Engineering / HVAC Technician

What is your role at the hospital? What do you do on a daily basis?
I troubleshoot, repair and maintain building equipment for the Engineering department on the Frisco campus.

What led you to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children? How long have you worked here?
I was a vendor working at the Dallas campus and was asked if I would be interested in coming to work for the hospital. Of course, I said yes! This April will be my five-year anniversary.

What do you enjoy most about Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children?
The environment, the people I work with and what we are able to do for the children, all make this a great place to work. I believe that’s why the hospital has so many people that have worked here for such a long time.

What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
My first job was at Nuehoff Meat Packing Company in Downtown Dallas, which is now where the American Airlines Center is located. I worked in the maintenance department for refrigeration. Since then, I’ve been an HVACR technician, which is what eventually brought me to the hospital.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to hang out with family and friends.

Three words to best describe you:
Dependable
Knowledgeable
Happy

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I’m not sure - I started in this field as a teenager and it is all that I’ve ever done.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I moved to the Atolls (a ring-shaped coral reef, island, or series of islets) in the South Pacific to work for Raytheon.
