Get to Know our SRH Staff: Amy Lake, O.T.R., C.H.T., Hand Occupational Therapist
Amy Lake is one of our hand occupational therapists and has been working at the hospital for 16.5 years. She recently appeared in one of our #SRHaccess Facebook Live segments. Watch the segment and get to know more about her below.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Helping kids increase their self-esteem and self-confidence through Hand Camp. Helping them learn they are defined by who they are on the inside, not what they look like on the outside.
What’s your favorite thing about the hospital?
The opportunity to work closely with several disciplines at the same time with the same goal of helping kids just be kids!
How did you find out about the hospital?
A friend of mine from Kansas saw an ad in an OT journal with a job opening and knew I was moving to the DFW area. She pointed it out to me and said she had heard good things about the hospital and encouraged me to apply.
What made you want to work here?
The close proximity to world-renowned physicians, the teaching aspect of the hospital, the laidback yet attention to each child kind of atmosphere, and the ability to make a difference in the life of a child on a daily basis.
What skills do you need for your job?
For my job specifically, since it is so specialized, it is helpful to have a good understanding of the anatomy of the hand and how to treat kids with hand differences. I am an Occupational Therapist and a Certified Hand Therapist.
What was your first job? What path did you take to get here?
My last clinical rotation in school (KU Med) was in a hospital-based outpatient hand clinic which turned into my first job as half acute care and half outpatient adult hand. Within 6 months I was a full-time adult hand therapist, which lasted 10 years until I moved to the DFW area and started working here doing pediatric Hand Therapy.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was young I wanted to be a Marine Biologist, but by high school it was a therapist and in college I narrowed it down to a Hand Therapist. So I applied to OT school and declared my special interest in Hand Therapy from the get-go!
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Zip-lined in Haiti over the ocean.
What’s the last book you read?
The Bible
What is something people don’t know about you?
I just became a grandma for the first time on November 17. But I’m pretty sure most people know….I’ve been so excited about it!!!
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
Ugh! I can’t sing. But I can play a back-up air guitar pretty well.
